**NEW**LOS ANGELES(Reuters) - Hi-yo Silver, the Lone Ranger may soon ride again -- but this time Tonto may wear a dress.

Columbia Pictures has purchased feature film rights to the 70-year-old legend of the masked lawman who rode a white horse named Silver and fired silver bullets, a studio spokesman said Wednesday.

Columbia said no actors have been cast and a script has yet to be written, although the studio intends to remain faithful to the original story. But Variety cited an unnamed source as saying the role of the Lone Ranger's faithful, loyal Indian companion, Tonto, could end up being played by a woman.

The latest motion picture version would be brought to the screen by "Gladiator" producers Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher, the entertainment trade paper said.

Meanwhile, the WB television network, a unit of AOL Time Warner Inc., is developing a "Lone Ranger" pilot for a new TV series that would air sometime next season, a network spokesman said.

For the small-screen project, young actor Chad Michael Murray, who has appeared on the WB series "Dawson's Creek" and "Gilmore Girls," will assume the title role most famously played on TV and film by the late Clayton Moore. Newcomer Nathaniel Arcand has been cast as Tonto, the role originally portrayed by Jay Silverheels.

Both projects are based on the "Lone Ranger" saga first created for radio in 1933, about a Texas Ranger who survives an ambush and is left for dead at the hands of outlaw Butch Cavendish, only to be rescued and nursed back to health by an Indian scout and childhood friend, Tonto.

Donning a mask to protect his identity, the Lone Ranger returns with Tonto to avenge the deaths of his comrades and battle outlaws throughout the West, with an endless supply of silver bullets forged from the silver mine he had discovered with his brother, one of the slain Rangers. Tonto called the masked man "kemo sabe," which meant "trusty scout."

Van Der Beek's fiancée is ex-Party of Fiver Heather McComb. Smith got engaged to Canadian thesp Harmoni Everett over the holidays. (May we suggest a Dawson's double wedding to boost the teen sudser's lackluster ratings?)

Variety reports that Katie Holmes and Oliver Platt are to star in InDigEnt Films' "Pieces of April," joining Patricia Clarkson in the directorial debut of "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" scribe Peter Hedges, who wrote the script.

When Holmes wraps her work on "Dawson's Creek," she will play a headstrong young woman who has tried to alienate her parents, but is forced to confront that troubled relationship with her dying mother.

Platt is working the film around "Queens Supreme," the pilot for a CBS series he's toplining that is being shot in New York, directed by Tim Robbins and produced by Julia Roberts' Shoelace Prods. and Revolution.

Ben Bolt is directing the project from Kevin Hood's screenplay.

Richardson, 35, specializes in period pieces and will be seen later this year in Affair of the Necklace.

As a result of that bloody killing [Andrew Morton, friend of Josh's family] JOSHUA JACKSON dropped out of "The Butterfly Effect" a feature film that was to start shooting in Vancouver in February. After time spent on the WTC site right after the collapse, and then with Andrew's
grieving family and friends, Joshua decided he would have to rethink any involvement with violent or bloody storylines. (from Josh and DC)

"The Abby" is an industry term for the second to the last shot of the day, or in this case the second to the last episode of the year. The term comes from an old Hollywood assistant director named Abby Singer, who apparently would often tell various wearisome production members that they were on the last shot (to ease their minds), when in reality they were on the second to last shot. Thus the term "The Abby." (credit Jason at dc.com)

Official Description: ABANDON is a psychological thriller about Katie Burke (KATIE HOLMES) a senior at one of America's most prestigious universities. Under enormous pressure to complete her thesis and earn a top job at one of the world's most competitive consulting firms, Katie is still coping with the sudden unexplained disappearance of her first love, Embry Langan (CHARLIE HUNNAM) two years prior.
Struggling to pull his life back together, newly sober Detective Wade Handler (BENJAMIN BRATT) is called in to investigate and uncovers some disconcerting facts concerning Embry's mysterious disappearance. As Katie tries to come to terms with her deep-rooted fear of abandonment, Katie must choose between past passions and new possibilities as Handler teeters on the edge of a fragile sobriety.
Both are weakened by the past; each becomes increasingly dependent on the other's strength as they decide their futures. Based upon the book "Adam's Fall" by Sean Desmond, Oscar winner Stephen Gaghan writes and directs while Katie Holmes (TEACHING MRS TINGLE) and Benjamin Bratt (THE NEXT BEST THING) star.
