Richard Gere was having dinner and having a hard time getting his meal done right because of a forgetful waiter. He kept sending the meal back and apologized for being so picky. The waiter insited it wasn't his fault, but his own fault. He explained he had just taken the job as a second one to help his cousins pay for college after they had lost their father in the World Trade Center tragedy. Gere told the waiter he wasn't giving him a tip...Instead, he handed the guy a check for $1,000 to help his cousins out. Arnold Schwarzeneggar was having lunch with some friends when an elderly lady approached him and asked for an autograph for her grandson who was in the hospital with leukemia. The success of this week's miniseries ''Rose Red'' proves there's still plenty of audience appetite for Stephen King, but the horror honcho tells the Los Angeles Times he plans to quit while he's ahead. ''That's it. I'm done,'' King says. ''Done writing books.'' Of course, he still has five books still in the works: a short story collection coming out in March called ''Everything's Eventual,'' the long-delayed novel ''From a Buick Eight'' coming out in the fall, and the last three novels in the ''Dark Tower'' series, due out over the next year. Not to mention his fall ABC series ''The Kingdom,'' based on Lars von Trier's two miniseries about a haunted hospital. Still, King says he feels like he's repeating himself. ''You get to a point where you get to the edges of a room, and you can go back where you've been, and basically recycle stuff,'' says the 54-year-old author. ''I've seen it in my own work. People when they read 'Buick Eight' are going to think 'Christine.' It's about a car that's not normal, okay? You say, 'I've said the things that I have to say, that are new and fresh and interesting to people.' Then you have a choice. You can either continue to go on, or say, 'I left when I was still on top of my game. I left when I was still holding the ball, instead of it holding me.''' EW.com BRITNEY AND BEAU TO TIE THE KNOT It would seem out of character for Britney Spears to get married, but that's the word from People magazine. She will tie the knot with long-time beau Justin Timberlake at a time yet to be announced. Spears made the announce- ment at an international music and film festival in France to assembled media. Britney is 20-going-on-35. Timberlake is 20. For months each has been adamant about the fact that they were not engaged and had no plans of marrying. Part of the subterfuge might have been an attempt on the part of Spears to be able to retain her sultry, bedroom-eyed, single status. Being single allows her to move in ways that hubby Timberlake might not like ... a kind of modern-day version of husband and wife Jack Benny and Mary Livingston just "being friends" so Jack could flirt on their show, or Roy and Dale -- until late in the run of their series -- living separate on-the-air lives. Spears and Timberlake met on the set of the new "Mickey Mouse Club" show when they were both 11. CASE CLOSED: Former Beverly Hills, 90210 actress Rebecca Gayheart, 29, has settled a wrongful-death lawsuit stemming from a car accident last summer in which she struck and killed a nine-year-old boy. Details of the settlement were not disclosed.

What Happened to Tom and Drew? DREW BARRYMORE and TOM GREEN have split up. ET broke the news to the press and obtained the divorce petition that Tom had filed that same day. Tom had cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, but there were no other clues as to what had gone wrong in their five-month marriage. Tom and Drew were engaged in July of 2000. They went through Tom's fight against testicular cancer and the loss of Drew's home to a fire. The couple enjoyed playing with the media, joking several times they were married or getting married well in advance of the actual ceremony. One of those times was a fake wedding on "Saturday Night Live" when Tom pretended to be left at the altar. It was July 7 when they were apparently legally wed on a hilltop in Malibu. Just two months ago when we spoke with Drew about her movie, 'Riding in Cars with Boys,' she told us how much she enjoyed being married. Last night, Drew was in New York for a fundraiser and though she had no comment on the divorce, she still wore her wedding ring. 12/19/01 BABY NEWS: This New Year will signal a Hollywood baby boom. ET.com DE NIRO FESTIVAL TO HELP NEW YORK RECOVER Two-time Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro and his movie production company partners have announced plans for a new film festival in the trendy Tribeca section of Lower Manhattan, to help the region recover from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The festival will be open to the pub- lic, showcasing around three dozen feature films and 20 short subjects from May 1-5, 2002. Plans call for the pictures to be screened at locations chosen for their ability to promote foot traffic in the area and provide a boost to small businesses that have been hurting econ- omically since the attacks. De Niro's relationship with Tribeca goes back close to 20 years. He even named his film company after it -- Tribeca Productions. "There are businesses down here that need help, small businesses, everything," said the 58-year-old star. He looks so much like De Niro, he has worked as his stunt double in two of De Niro's films. ''Angel'' star David Boreanaz and Jaime Bergman (''Son of the Beach'') were married at the Ingleside Inn in Palm Springs Nov. 24. It's the second marriage for 30-year-old Boreanaz (whose two-year marriage to social worker Ingrid Quinn ended in 1999) and the first for 26-year-old ex-Playboy Playmate Bergman. The busy couple, both in production on their respective series, have put off honeymoon plans until at least Christmas. courtesy of EW.com
